2024: LULAC OF RIVERSIDE is a coalition member of the Sheriff Accountability Coalition. Alongside the ACLU of Southern California, Starting Over, Starting Over Strong LWV Riverside and many concerned Riverside County residents, we are calling on our Board of Supervisors to to provide much-needed accountability for the Riverside Sheriff's Office.
The ongoing issues surrounding sheriff-involved shootings, in-custody deaths, and the significant financial liability resulting from the lack of oversight have eroded public trust and demand urgent reforms.
We believe independent oversight of law enforcement is good for both deputies and the community they serve, as well as important for good government practices.
To restore and maintain confidence in the Sheriff's Department and its operations, we demand the following:
- Separation of the roles of the County Coroner's Office and the Sheriff
Department. - Establishment of a community oversight body for the operations, all internal and external formal complaints, and serve as the public facing entity that engages with the community.
- Establishment of an Office of Inspector General (OIG) to provide independent and comprehensive oversight, monitoring of, and reporting about the Sheriff's Department and serve as the investigative arm of the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission.
- The activities and recommendations of the community oversight body to present regularly, directly, publicly, and transparently to the full County Board of Supervisors.
- The community oversight body and OIG to have subpoena authority for the independent investigation of all aspects of Sheriff's Office operations including access to personnel record.
Much work lies ahead. We face resistance from the sheriff's department, the sheriff's deputy union, entrenched politicians and the spread of public misinformation.
Sign this petition to demand Riverside County Sheriff accountability, independent oversight, an Inspector General, and the separation of the Coroner's Office from the Sheriff's Department.

The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture: new art museum in Riverside
This new art museum, located in Downtown Riverside, is 61,420 square feet of renovated space displaying vibrant Chicano art; paintings, photographs, drawings and sculptures while also housing a community art exhibit, video multi-purpose room and education studio.
Formally the space accommodated Riverside’s main public library, but now is the permanent residence for hundreds of pieces of Chicano art, including Cheech Marin’s vast collection accompanied with touring artist exhibits.
The second floor is currently showing Einar and Jamex de la Torre’s, exhibition called Collidoscope: de la Torre Brothers Retro-Perspective. The de la Torre brothers’ exhibition is only visiting Riverside until January 2023, then it will continue to tour nationally.
Some of our LULAC of Riverside members attended the Preview of the Cheech Art Museum on Thursday June 16th. They were moved by the one-of-a-kind art throughout the museum, inspired by the wide variety of mediums used, blown away by the intricate meanings, and highly recommend everyone to visit. During the Preview day, LULAC of Riverside members were able to meet Cheech Marin, himself; as well as the de la Torre brothers, Einar and Jamex.

These certificates were distributed to 10 families in the Riverside School District and 10 families at the Jurupa School District. Each family got four, $25.00 certificates from Northgate. Our LULAC members,Norma Barles and Joel Martinez shown in the pictures work for these School Districts. Norma works for Riverside School District and Joelworks for the Jurupa Unified. Each of the families were very grateful for the food vouchers and we are very grateful to NORTHGATE MARKET in Riverside for joining LULAC OF RIVERSIDE on an event to help our families in need during these very difficult times.
